Israel förbjuder, i vad som förmodligen bland Israels försvarare kommer att kallas ”sant demokratisk anda”, två partier som kritiserar Israels krigföring i Gaza:
There is no need for horrifying pictures of Gaza under attack. It is sufficient to watch a short clip from the meeting of Israel’s Central Elections Committee to understand how Israel—including all of its social and political institutions—has entirely lost any pretense of being a proper state. A collection of shouting thugs who, with a wave of their hands, decide to ban two political parties that represent more than 2/3 of the Palestinian voters in Israel. The fact that the Israeli High Court will possibly annul this shocking decision does not change anything: they are representatives of the people and this is how they look and sound.
The decision of the Central Elections Committee demonstrates, for the umpteenth time, to what extent Israeli democracy has ceased functioning, as democratic rights are dependent on the agreement of this or that parliamentary majority, characterized by more or less enlightened tyranny, not a democratic regime. So it was one year ago with the immunity of Member of Knesset Azmi Bishara, as it is now with the status of Balad (The National Democratic Assembly and Ra’am Ta’al.
För mig är sådant verkligen ingen demokrati, utan något annat. Israel griper också människor som protesterar mot krigföringen. Känns inte så värst demokratiskt det heller om jag får säga så?
