On the one hand, it is crucial to break “the clash of civilizations” perception of our world, and to show that the relevant dividing lines are between values (colonialism versus freedom, domination versus equality, rights versus might) and not between tribes (ethnic, national, religious). In that sense, we have to repeat again that the conflict in the Middle East is not between Judeo-Christian civilization and Islam, but between re-colonization and the struggle for national sovereignty.

The presence of Israelis and Western Jews in the demonstrations against the Israeli massacre in Gaza helps to break this image that the neo-conservative ideology is trying to impose on us. It also helps to fight, in our own ranks, what I call war-anti-Judaism. War-anti-Judaism is different from classical (Christian) anti-Semitism because it is not based on the discrimination of Jews as such, but on a hostile attitude towards a (false) concrete enemy in a concrete conflict, on an incorrect identification between Jews, Israelis and Zionism – a confusion cynically built by the Zionist ideologists themselves.

Let’s be crystal clear: even if not a single Jew (in Israel or abroad) would have taken part in these mobilizations, they remain just and necessary. With or without their Jewish partners, non-Jews and especially Muslims have the duty to denounce Israeli terrorism and to express solidarity with the Palestinian people. They should be frightened by the permanent blackmail on anti-Semitism.

This can explain my hesitation when friends, undoubtedly motivated by very good intentions, put too much emphasis on the Jewish dissidents, as if they were saying: ”we can denounce Israeli brutality because Jews are doing the same.”

I do not believe in collective responsibility: each individual is responsible for his or her decisions and actions. However, there is a critical mass that allows us to remain silent about the issue of a split society versus a consensual one. Unlike in the eighties and the nineties, the marginal weight of the Israeli dissidence obliges us, if we want to be honest, to say that the Israeli society has been behind the murderous aggression on Gaza and shall therefore be judged accordingly. Like in the myth of Sodom and Gomorrah and the famous dialogue between Abraham and God, a few thousand dissidents are too few to serve as alibis in the judgment of history.

/*off-topic, borttaget*/ #AS
