Mordet på den svarte tonåringen Trayvon Martin i Sanford, Florida, USA har uppröt en mängd människor i USA. Allt från lokalbefolkning till presidenten. Fallet är dock inget unikt i USA. Den här typen av rasistiska mord är regelbundet förekommande men de får inte alltid denna uppmärksamhet:
POLICE AND racist killings of African Americans are horrifyingly familiar. So why the protest movement around the case of Trayvon Martin–and why now?
Rev. Jesse Jackson, speaking at a March 30 press conference with Black family members of young people recently shot and killed by police in the Chicago area, put his finger on the issue. The mainstream media ”has adjusted” to the routine deaths of African Americans at the hands of cops–but their family members haven’t.
”The traditional media did not break this story,” Jackson said. ”It was Facebook and Twitter that really broke the story. Here, when young brother Watts is killed, it’s a one-night story, and we move on and wait for the next one.”
Jackson was referring to the police murder of Stephon Watts, the young Black man with autism shot by police in Calumet City outside Chicago in February.
Stephon Watts var en autistisk pojke som hade en smörkniv i sin hand när han kom ut från sitt hus. Det ledde till att polisen sköt honom. Det finns mängder med fall av detta slag i USA. USA är ett i grunden rasistiskt land som har mycket stora problem med institutionaliserad rasism.
