MFV Lootus

On February 22nd 2002, the owner company of the Lootus II, MFV Lootus Ltd, was given a 5000 EEK (ca 400 USD) fine by the county court of Tartu, Estonia. The court also confiscated their property with a total value of approximately 1,15 million EEK (ca 90.000 USD), accusing one of company’s boats in catching 71 tons of illegal fish on the territory of North Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO). On the 19th of December 2004 Greenpeace discovered the Estonian flagged Lootus II using the fishing net with too little meshes according to the standards of NAFO. According to Greenpeace, Lootus II has been cited seven times since 2000 for breaking NAFO rules. However some of these were only small violations. In August 2005 Greenpeace ship Esperanza was able to film the Lootus II catching halibut. The Lootus II had been bottom trawling in the same area for 18 hours, which is highly irregular. Usually trawling lasts only for about six to eight hours. Greenpeace crew suspected that the fishing crew refused to haul in their nets, because they were being watched.

Reason for blacklisting: August 7, 2006 – NAFO inspectors issued one citation to the Estonian vessel LOOTUS II for misreporting catches July 31, 2006 – The Estonian vessel LOOTUS II was issued one citation for misrecording catches. This is considered to be a serious infringement of NAFO’s conservation and enforcement measures. December 18, 2006 – The Lootus II, an Estonian vessel, was given a citation for small mesh size. July 31, 2004 – The Estonian vessel LOOTUS II was issued one citation for misrecording catches. This is considered to be a serious infringement of NAFO’s conservation and enforcement measures.

The armed Australian patrol ship Oceanic Viking has uncovered further evidence of fishing boats operating in Antarctic waters, but outside Australia’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), in contravention of an international agreement designed to protect valuable species such as the Patagonian toothfish. http://www.bymnews.com/new/conte nt/view/22868/82 Oceanic Viking had detected nine unregulated fishing boats during its 2006 patrol of the Southern Ocean in the BANZARE Bank area, just outside Australia‘s Heard Island and McDonald Islands (HIMI) EEZ.. The nine vessels the Oceanic Viking detected were the Sargo, Hammer, Ross, Condor, North Ocean, South Ocean, East Ocean, West Ocean and the Odin. Information obtained from the vessels indicates they were flagged to Togo, China and Cambodia.
